January 30, 2015 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Two snow days in the middle of the week made for an interesting week!  We were all very disappointed that we didn't get to go to the New England Aquarium on Tuesday but we are all looking forward to going this coming Wednesday, February 4th.  I am still looking for a couple of more chaperones for the trip.  Please let me know if you are interested in coming.  More information will be going home on Tuesday, but students will need a bagged lunch and disposable drink for the trip.

We have been doing more with rhyming this week as well as continuing work with uppercase letters.  I have also been teaching the students how to sign each letter with sign language.  We have learned letters A-F.  You will have to see if your child remembers an of the signs!

The students have also been using watercolor paints this week to create underwater scenes.  They have also been drawing lots of different sea creatures in their “A House for Hermit Crab” books.  They will be finishing these books next week and will start bringing them home after they read them to the class.

We have been working more with subtraction in math.  I will be sending addition fluency fact cards home next week for students to practice with.

We started learning about maps and written directions this week as a part of our writing program.  Students will be drawing simple maps of locations within the school and will then be writing a set of directions to go along with the map.  The students enjoyed looking at different maps online and working together to describe different locations within our school.

The list of students’ names for Valentine’s Day went home this week.  We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 13th by opening our valentines and having an extra snack.  Students are invited to bring two snacks from home that day, one for the morning and one for the afternoon.

Our class will be participating in Wee Deliver, a school-wide post office system from February 1-13.  Students can mail letters and pictures to students in other classrooms by addressing envelopes and putting a sticker in the corner for a stamp.  Students always enjoy writing to their siblings, friends, neighbors, and former teachers.  You can also participate if you would like.  You can write a letter to your child, address it, and put a sticker in the corner and drop it into the post box outside our main office.  Our classroom address is 115 Aquarium Drive, Burlington, MA 01803.

I hope you all enjoy the weekend and hope you are all looking forward to more snow next week!

PS...Please be sure to send lots of winter clothes with your child for recess (snowpants, boots, hats, mittens/gloves, jackets, sweatshirts, scarves, etc.).  We will go outside if the temperature is above 20 degrees.  It is also helpful if you can help your child practice putting everything on independently and taking it all off independently too.  You can probably imagine what it's like getting 18 Kindergarten students ready for recess in the winter time!  Please also label each piece of clothing with your child's name.  You may also want to leave a spare set of clothes in your child's backpack or at school in case anything gets wet while playing outside.

Burlington Science Center Snow Science Fun

Looking for something to do during our snow day tomorrow?  Check out the Burlington Science Center's website for some snow fun!

January 26, 2015 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

The children are certainly learning quite a bit about sea life!  Their aquariums are on the back wall and they have made octopuses and sea turtles and have learned many interesting facts about them both.  You should ask them how many legs an octopus has and about where the sea turtle lays her eggs!

We had a wonderful Fish Day on Friday!  The students enjoyed visiting all the different Kindergarten classrooms to complete various fish projects.  All the fish projects are now displayed in our hallway…making our own beautiful aquarium.  Make sure you check out my blog post to see some exciting pictures from this very exciting day!

We had a special Superfish Presentation today from the Burlington Science Center.  We learned a lot about the sea creatures we will see at the aquarium and got to see a real dead octopus!  Many of the students even dared to touch it!

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Thursday, February 13th by passing out Valentines.  Please don’t attach any candy or other edible items to the Valentines.  If you would like to send something, pencils or stickers make great alternatives to food.  I will send a list home with students later this week for students to use to write out their valentines.  I will also include the names in an email if anyone wishes to start them sooner.  Students can also bring a special snack from home to eat in the afternoon on Valentine’s Day.  They will need a morning and an afternoon snack that day.

The students continue to write in their journals.  We continually encourage them to write on their own in their best guess spelling and not to be afraid to make a mistake.  We have been practicing our letters and numbers but it never hurts to have them practice at home too. The more they write numbers 0-20, the easier and more natural they will become.  The teen numbers are particularly challenging so those are great numbers to practice.  We have finished working on addition in math and talking about joining groups and finding the sum/total.  I will be sending home addition flash cards for you to practice with your child.  Children are supposed to be fluent with these facts by the end of Kindergarten, which means they should be able to say the answers in less than 3 seconds.  I will try to send those home by next week.  We just started working with subtraction last week.

We started our guided reading program last week.  Guided reading enables children to practice reading strategies with the teacher's support in small groups.  This is just the beginning.  It helps your children to become more and more comfortable with text.  It’s amazing how far they have already come since September!

TOMORROW is a SNOW DAY so there will be NO SCHOOL on Tuesday, January 27th.  Because of this, we have rescheduled our trip to the Aquarium for next Wednesday, February 4th.  More information will go home next week regarding the field trip.  Please wait for a call tomorrow night regarding a school cancellation or a delay for Wednesday.

The Burlington Science Center put together some fun snow science activities for students to do at home since tomorrow will be a snow day.  I would encourage you to check out their blog.  www.bsciencecenter.wordpress.com.  I also added a post to my blog with the activities.

Have a great snowy week and enjoy all the shoveling!

Superfish Presentation

Mr. Musselman from the Burlington Science Center came to teach us some pretty neat facts about some of the sea creatures we will see at the aquarium next week.  He also brought in the Superfish to show us all the important parts and features of a fish.  The most exciting thing he brought was a real dead octopus!  We got to see all eight arms, the mouth, and the siphon that it uses to squirt ink!  Some of the students even dared to touch it!

Fish Day Fun

The students enjoyed going from one classroom to another to complete various fish and sea creature projects. The projects are now hanging in our hallway to make our very own aquarium!  We want to give a special thank you to Mrs. Fragoso, Mrs. Collins, and Mrs. Sneider for volunteering during our really fun day!
